Unhappy wireless + newbie = failure

Hey,
i have a laptop (Toshiba satellite a65-1028) and wanted to try linux on it. I saw on linux-on-laptops.com that someone with a similar model install debian on it and it work. So far i have done the basic install but haven't even install fluxbox on it. First thing i wanna solve is my wireless since i mostly use it in school and they offer free wireless connection for the students. Before i had windows xp on it and the signals were just detected and i connected to their network but now in linux i have no clue on how to do the same. I search around but haven't find exactly what i've been looking for and i see i need to know things like ESSID and access point which is info i don't know. I figure the first thing i might need to do is install the wireless tools which can easily be done with apt-get but as how is the proper way to configure it ,no clue. The wireless card is an ATHEROS and i wanted to know if anyone knew how to do this?

Thanks in advance...

I have a compaq 4010 that uses atheros too, i have gotten it to work on slackware by following this guide closely:

http://jmccoy.sdf-us.org/slackware/t...5.php#wireless

I think there must be some similar guide for debian in the net too.

I have also tried to install FC4 on the same notebook, it works too, but via some madwifi rpm installation, really easy too.

Good luck.

First, you need to install wireless tools:

#apt-get install wireless-tools

Second, I have never gotten an Atheros wifi card working with ndiswrapper, but others have. Atheros is supported by madwifi: http://sourceforge.net/projects/madwifi/

Look at that website. Also, look in the hcl on this forum for your wireless card and see what others have written about it. I finally got my card working by following instructions I got from someone from the hcl.

Good luck!
