Why debian has such poor harddisk and video support for stable/testing/kmuto ?

Hola, I have tried to install debian stable / testing daily built; to kmuto-cdrom as indicated in here, but still it is very difficult to see the harddrive or when it is seen grub nor lilo can be installed: grub/error at boot. Is Debian kind of old distro? Is it adviced to use other distro that works with new hardware. My friends have oldy pentium and can install debian. Their advice as it works didnt not follow this, and still it seems or laptop or 2tb disks have no support for debian install (cdroms, all versions). It is a pitty that debian is destined to older machines, since it could be use to more persons. I will try ubuntu, maybe it will work for the installation. I am bit disappointed rather. I had slackware and wanted something that had more larger package availability. not working unfortunately on 3 machines :-(
