which version of debian do i have now?

i have recently installed to hard disk from the knoppix 5.1.1 live cd. i did "apt-get upgrade" and everything went fine. what i am wondering is which version of debian do i have now?? there are splashscreens in the grub file for both sid and sarge. is it either one of these? thanks in advance to all my friends at LQ, you have helped me out many times and i look forward to hearing from you.

You don't have any version of Debian, you have a version of Knoppix, which is a child of Debian.

Before you did apt-get upgrade, did you do apt-get update? Unless you changed your /etc/apt/sources.list from Knoppix feeds to Debian, you still have Knoppix, just the most current Knoppix 5.1.1, presuming you did apt-get update before apt-get upgrade.

Peace,
JimBass

thank you very much for your prompt reply. i did do apt-get update prior to apt-get upgrade so that must mean i have knoppix, the very latest version? it seems like a nice system. i like using it. is there any way to upgrade it to debian?

Yes, you have the latest Knoppix. It's highly discouraged to attempt an upgrade (actually: downgrade) from Knoppix to Debian, as both use different repositories and Debian has older packages (except for Sid, but acquiring that is not recommended for new, unexperienced users).

Yes, trying to switch from one distro to another can frequently cause major problems, particularly for a new user. You could simply erase Knoppix and install Debian, but why do that? I love Debian personally, but what it is you hope to accomplish with Debian that you can't with Knoppix?

Peace,
JimBass
