Where are my icons

I am trying out an installation of knoppix as a way of getting into Debian.

For the user that I have created, 'alan' the desktop shows the labels on the icins but not the little pictures themselves but it is Ok in knoppixuser. Any idea what I have to do to get the icons looking right.

KDE settings enable icons on desktop is enabled

You do have icons in your KDE menu?

Getting into the 'real' Debian might be slightly harder, it should be easier to manage (problems) once set up. Knoppix is too much a mix testing and unstable and primarily a demo version with sligtly different settings than what a Debian user is used to (imho, though I have only installed Knoppix once; just to see how the installation was handled).
