What about Debian Testing with KERNEL-LOW-MEMORY in the repos?

Hello,

If one could install Debian with low ressources, i.e. old computer ie 266MHz to 450 Mhz, that could resurrect some old machines?

Wouldn't be possible to compile the current kernels with a minimum of things, to limit them, to low-memory machines ?

One can remove several things, even why not all the non-relevant things from the kernels to make them suited to old pc?

There is another use for an old PC than THAT; Debian LINUX is there !

How little memory? When I boot into lxde I am only using around 50mb. A window manager would be even less.

I can, but it sure ain't much fun (i didn't tweak it or such, just a stock install with fluxbox/e16/icewm). I use it for learning cli-stuff and don't start X.

I have experienced the same, but still, 50mb is saying crontab memory. but this, if you compare to an old mandrake or corel linux, you can see that those kernel are ultra light with nothing, which leaves a much faster Windows manager and linux, overall

IIRC up until recently Debian did support i386 machines, but now I believe the threshold is i486. So, I think it would be a major effort to get it to run on a 286.

A little googling supplied http://www.debian.org/releases/stabl...h02s01.html.en which states:

However, Debian GNU/Linux lenny will not run on 386 or earlier processors.
However, 64 MB of RAM should be no problem.

Cheers,

Evo2.
