Want to startup with command prompt then have KDE when i startx

I have Sarge on an ASUS Pundit and I want to set it up to startup with the command prompt and then have KDE as my GUI when I 'startx' I've been trying different things in the /etc/X11/ directory but I think I'm doing more damage then good. Thanks for any help.

you can use:

/usr/X11R6/bin/xwmconfig

if it's not insatlled i dare say you can apt-get it.

The way I do it is to comment out the line in /etc/X11/default_window_manager. It isn't the most eloquent way to do it, but it works.

Then create a file ".xinitrc" in your home directory that contains the line "exec startkde" or "exec gnome-session" or "exec whatever-wm-you're-using". When you type "startx" KDE will start.
