Using mount.cifs as a user (not su) on Lenny

I'm trying out Debian for the first time (as a long time Linux user) and trying to use mount.cifs. On Mandriva you can just use it as a user but on Lenny it's giving a permissions error. I suspect it might be something to do with it being in /sbin.

I actually have to run it as /sbin/mount.cifs ... whereas on Mandriva it's obviously in the user's path as it just works.

Anyone know whether there's a way of using mount.cifs without having to be root?

Add suid bit to mount.cifs and umount.cifs
Code:
# chmod +s /sbin/mount.cifs /sbin/mount.cifs
