System not able to get updates

While trying to update my system, it gets stuck at following:

Code:
Get:1 http://ftp.au.debian.org/debian/ stable/main dpkg i386 1.17.27 [3,019 kB]
Get:2 http://ftp.au.debian.org/debian/ stable/main dpkg i386 1.17.27 [3,019 kB]
Get:3 http://ftp.au.debian.org/debian/ stable/main dpkg i386 1.17.27 [3,019 kB]
Get:4 http://ftp.au.debian.org/debian/ stable/main dpkg i386 1.17.27 [3,019 kB]
(3% [4 dpkg 1,521 kB/3,019 kB 49%)
The download speed becomes very slow at this point. What may be happening here?

Edit: This has gone on for 13 cycles till now (each cycle takes about 5 minutes).

You may choose (if havenīt already done) a mirror for updates near to you.

That did the trick! Changing mirror in /etc/apt/sources.list promptly corrected the problem and update process is working again. Thanks.

I will be downloading and installing netselect-apt to regularly check for best mirror. Is there any better option?

You can check the nearby (or fastest) mirror by downloading some updates.

Yes. Use this: http://httpredir.debian.org/
"The redirector aims to solve the problem of choosing a Debian mirror. It uses the geographic and network location of the user and the mirrors, the architecture of the requested files, IP address family, the availability and freshness of the mirrors, and a few other things.
The result: it selects the best mirror that can serve the file."

example of my sources.list:
Code:
# MAIN, CONTRIB, and NON-FREE REPO'S
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free

This appears to be the best method. Thanks.
