startx confusion

Hi folks,
I could use some help. I am running FluxBox over a minimal install of Debian Etch. I don't use a display manager , I type "startx" to log into a FluxBox session.
On my previous Debian and Ubuntu installations using this set up I would always have an .xsessions-errors file created in my home directory and used ~/.Xresources to manage xterm and aterm.
In my current install ~/.xsession-errors has gone missing and I am using
~/.Xdefaults to manage aterm and xterm.
Could someone explain the difference between these two start-up routines and help me find my xsessions-error file?
Thank you,
Dan

Perhaps the difference (amongst others) between XFree86 and Xorg? Not sure (never had Xorg here), but looks to me the most likely explaination...

I have ~/.xsession-errors in boxen running x11-6.8.2 and Fluxbox 0.9.13, so that's not the answer -- though I don't know what might be the answer.

I do know I've got a box running Slackware-current and Fluxbox 1.0rc from Slackware that recorded no ~/.xsession-errors file -- though X did have errors, lots of which showed up in the console when I shut down the X server. However:
Code:
mingdao@silas:~$ find / -iname '*.xsessions-errors*' 2>/dev/null
mingdao@silas:~$
Perhaps they've done away with it, so we don't see how bad a GUI Xorg really is?
