sound recording problem

hi,
I tried to record sound, using the standard grecord on gnome
(testing), although it is running correctly on a PC, it didn't record
on my laptop which is a new one ( compaq dual core). The sound card is
good since I can hear sound and play video.
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family)

so I want to check that the recorder is good ( the headphone is good I
checked it on other machine)

thanks for help

try checking the setting in alsamixer

check record levels

**Check to make sure their isn't a switch in alsamixer to change a line out for 5.1 to a line in for recording. ***
