I decided to install Debian by just installing the system package and then I added xorg, x-window-system after wards and kdm and kdebase. Udev is installed as well as alsa base.

Now I am wondering what packages do I need to have installed so that when I plug my usb storage devices in they are auto mounted.

Also what other sound packages do I need in order to have sound?

I am using debian etch and in the past when I have isntealled it sound has worked straight off when I chose the desktop setting during install so I know my hardware works under it.

Any suggestions?

edit: I got the sound working. I just cant figure out about getting hotplug and udev to auto mount cd roms and usb sticks when I put them in.

try running alsaconf to see if it can detect your sound card and load the modules for it. also check the mixer settings to ensure the sound isn't muted.
