Send messages and alerts to the linux workstations

hi

I'm looking for a software to send messages and alerts to the debian squeeze workstations with GNOME and XFCE.
A small pop-up windows with a message or alert should be opened on these linux desktops.

libnotify-bin offers notify-send (-> $ notify-send "some message here").
How to reach that over the lan is beyond me (i understood you want that).
There is also "wall", but its cli (no idea if you can configure it or use a tool to point it to gui)
