You probably installed Gnome the "newbie" way, taking the entire fat and flatulent package instead of installing gnome-core and building on what you needed. You should get rid of gnome-screensaver and install xscreensaver and xscreensaver-gl instead.
The only thing I'm not sure of is whether you can remove gnome-screensaver by itself since you installed it as part of a meta-package.
