running RealPlayer

Hi

i need to install realplayer so i can view news video from places like the bbc etc.

i downloaded the latest from real/helix site. it installed fine - no probs, links ok even an entry in my gnome menu.

problem is it won't run. i get no error message - just nothing. i have tried it from the console also -again no error just hangs.

could it perhaps be something to do with sound (i'm guessing here - have noticed some other audio related apps not run quite right when sound is set to something it doesn't like)

i'm running debian testing - kernel 2.6.7

i have googled around - even this site... most issues people have seem to be with installing.

not sure if this is related - have helix installed also (removed it also - no change to real) it would run - window would open and it looked functional - when i opened a file to view/listen to it would crash.

any ideas would be appreciated (either realplayer or even helix).

thanks
Takis

Hi

some progress... read in the helix forum about removing the swf plugins from the real install dir. this got it started and it opens fine.

now it has the same exact problem as the helix player. i open it and it just hangs and crashes.

clearly a problem common to both.

any suggestions appreciated

ok... more progress... and its fixed now.

for anyone with a similar issue:

it would appear that helix and real players do not like esound. turned that off and am now using alsa under gnome also (which starts esd by default i think).

all good
