root permission to display/X

I would like to be able to su to root and start programs from terminal,
this is disabled in debian:
I get
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

wjen trying to run an app as root.
How is this changed?

before doing su run:
Code:
xhost localhost
That will allow users from localhost to open X connections.

This is an extremely common question. You might try searching the forum before asking. In fact, someone just asked about it yesterday:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=419499

Of course, it's hard to know whether or not a question is frequently asked, but a quick search can often tell you that.

apt-cache search sux
sux - wrapper around su which will transfer your X credentials
