Residual reference to Jessie after update to Buster when asking for updates

Hi everyone.

I am really a beginner here and I needed to update a Jessie based VPS to Buster.

I follew several online guides such as
https://phoenixnap.com/kb/how-to-upg...bian-9-stretch
and
https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/update...ian-10-buster/

Everything went fine, but when I ask for updates with apt-get update... I have the following:

"Hit http://deb.debian.org buster InRelease
Hit http://deb.debian.org buster/updates InRelease
Hit http://deb.debian.org buster-updates InRelease
Get:1 https://packages.sury.org jessie InRelease
Ign https://packages.sury.org jessie InRelease
Get:2 https://packages.sury.org jessie Release.gpg"

I cleaned the sources.list

but when I grep jessie in apt I have the following

apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades:13:// n,codename (eg, "jessie", "jessie-updates")
apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades:22:// ${distro_codename} Installed codename (eg, "jessie")
apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades:27:// "o=Debian,n=jessie";
apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades:28:// "o=Debian,n=jessie-updates";
apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades:29:// "o=Debian,n=jessie-proposed-updates";
apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades:30:// "o=Debian,n=jessie,l=Debian-Security";
Binary file trusted.gpg.d/debian-archive-jessie-security-automatic.gpg matches
Binary file trusted.gpg.d/debian-archive-jessie-stable.gpg matches
Binary file trusted.gpg.d/debian-archive-jessie-automatic.gpg matches
sources.list.d/php7.3.list:1:deb https://packages.sury.org/php/ jessie main

So, how do I fix it?
What did I do wrong?

The VPS seems to work fine, both WP installs on it are working fine too.

Thank you for any help on this matter.

Note, I am really a beginner so please make it simple for me to understand ;-). If it goes well I have 7 more VPS to upgrade like that.

I got that sort of thing too.

There's /etc/apt/sources.list ( which is eventually being phased out) and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/anything.list

Apt reads all of them. sources.list, and any .list files in sources.list.d. Check them both.

Just to clarify:
you dist-upgraded to stretch, rebooted, made sure everything works, then dist-upgraded to buster. Correct?

Anyhow, it seems like you have a residual 3rd part repo somewhere in /etc/apt/sources.list.d - as business_kid pointed out.
