reallllllllly need help on this - pcmcia

hey all.
i installed debian with bf24, then removed the pcmcia packages (im on a laptop) during install thinking i would have to compile from source anyway.

everytime i boot up, i get the warning:
3w-xxxx: No cards with valid units found.

and then a "modprobe: can't locate module pcmcia_core"

i did an apt-get of pcmcia-cs after the install (which installed the kernel-image too), but same result.

i tried compiling the kernel (2.4.22) with pcmcia-cs modules from source (tried doing this the debian way with make-kpkg),m and it stops b4 the modules_image with an error : cant find "/usr/src/modules/pcmcia-cs" (i made a symlink from /usr/src to the modules dir under /home where i placed the source - could that be a problem?)

where and how can i get the pcmcia_core module from?

pls, pls help - thanks in advance.

when i do a "locate pcmcia_core" i get this:
"/lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4.old/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o"

it's in the /lib folder i made when kernel-image was being installed (it told me to move it, so i moved!!!!)

fixed.
moved everything to /home, re-installed the damn thing. apparently it was because i was selecting "ask" when the option to shutdown card managers was asked. and when i did an upgrade from woody to sid, it didnt 'ask", and something musta gone wrong.
so this time, i selected "always' to shut down the services during upgrades.
