hi guys,
i am not an outright newbie, i have about a year of full-time debian usage behind me, i run a debian stable box which is solid as a rock.
software info:
my intial install was from a debian woody, 3.0 cd set, using the bf2.4 install/boot option. (CD 5 autoboot)
hence i think i have kernel 2.4.18
only backports/non-standard apps i run are:
OO.o from ftp.freenet.de, and
mplayer from marillat
hardware info:
generic nic (autodetected and works, cant even remember what it is)
video card = radeon 9600 (recent upgrade from geforce mx2)
soltek MB, athlon TB 1400+
soundblaster live (works with correct module, no probs)
i would prefer to keep to the stable branch if possible but am having some problems after upgrading my video card.
i am currently running my radeon9600 with a generic vesa driver, the refresh rate is prolly 60hz but it feels much worse than that let me tell you! Also scrolling and stuff is sooo slow!
anyhow onto my questions:
1. should i upgrade my kernel?
2. if so, can it be done via apt-get install xxx
3. why does my current kernel not show up under "kpackage" as being installed but older kernels are listed when i choose to view all packages?
4. do i have to upgrade xfree86 to get my radeon to work?
5. is there a backport for radeon drivers that i havent found yet?
6. do i need to upgrade my kernel for the radeon drivers?
7. please confirm that there is no way from me to get my current woody radeon driver/module working. (when i modconf, install kernel/drivers/video/radeonfb, it fails to install)
8. am i using the wrong driver/module? (now that would be funny)
9. is this too many questions?
this is linux questions isnt it - lol
Note that i dont particulary care if 3d acceleration doesnt function (i dual boot for that
, i just want my video card to perform properly in 2d apps.
cheers folks
