APT:

you do "apt-get update" to update the database
and then "apt-cache search xxx" to search for stuff

see the APT howto for more details

You could also install 'synaptic'. It's very convenient.

so, how would i install a program, and all of its dependancies? for example, would this be correct to install gaim?

apt-get build-dep gaim
apt-get install gaim

thanks

apt resolves dependencies on its own. To install gaim you'd execute just
Code:
apt-get install gaim

You'll want to read the APT how-to (link is in my sig).

What heema says is true. If you don't need to understand anything about the Debian packaging system and don't want to understand why sometimes things don't work the way you expected, then you don't need to read the APT how-to.

Seriously though, for many people a top-down approach is better. Use synaptic and keep in mind that there is a powerful tool that synaptic uses called apt-get, which has its own manual and everything.
