Problem shutting down new system

Hello,

when I do ``shutdown now'' as root, the system does not shut down. Instead, it says ``Enter root password for maintenance, or press Ctrl-D to continue''. If I do C-d the system starts again. Why is this? If I turn off the computer with the powerswitch, then it replays transactions during startup, just as if the filesystem didn't shut down properly. What is causing this behavior? How can I power off my system the nice way? I'm using Sarge, installed from network.

thats exactly what the system should do after "shutdown now". to poweroff (halt) the system you need to use "shutdown -h now"

noapic nolapic

In my particular case, on my PII 266, i chose 'noapic nolapic' as a boot parameter, with the net-installer-rc2, installed the package 'apmd' and rebooted, then as root: 'shutdown -h now'.

GRUB: if you're using it, add:

noapic nolapic

in /boot/grub/menu.lst, in the line that starts with:

#koptions

withouth descommenting it.

LILO: do the same to the file /etc/lilo.conf

in the line that starts with

#append: ""

uncomment it, and make sure 'noapic nolapic' is within the quotation marks already there, so i looks like this:

append= "noapic nolapic"

don't forget to install 'apmd' and reboot, an then:

#shutdown -h now

I don't know if it will work for you, but it does for me.
