problem recreating xorg.conf

hey all...

Im using Debian Sid and seem to have killed my xserver by deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I thought that having done this I could recreate it using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but that doesnt seem to be working. I get asked all the questions but no config file is made as a result.

Anyone know what I can do to recreate this file?

Have you tried running xorgconfig as root?

That is not a Debian command.

I can email you mine (you probably also have backups in you /etc/X11 directory.)

You have to manually edit the file write now.

When I tried running that I go something like
cannot make changes xorg.conf has been customized.

I rm it then got

cannot not make changes X has been customized.

deleted that.

Now I get no error but it won't create the file.

Fortunately I had a backup.

xorgconfig is available on any distro that uses xorg. I have used it myself on Debian Sid.

debian:~# xorgconfig
-su: xorgconfig: command not found
debian:~# apt-cache search xorgconfig
debian:~#

JackieBrown: If you have ati video, and GLX is working, I'd like a copy of your xorg.conf file ... rhandrich@comcast.net

It certainly was available when I setup Debian for a friend a few months ago (part of the xbase-clients package).

type
Code:
X -configure
and follow the instructions which you will have in the console. The auto configuration will try to create a file in /root/ directory named xorg.conf.new.
