thank you for you response but thats not exactly what I was asking about
ok, heres an example:
1. I install profptd, it starts itself right after installation with default config.
2. I stop the service(because its not configured and I dont need it to be running yet) and remove the symlink from my default runlevel so it doesnt start at boot.
3. I upgrade proftpd and again it starts, plus puts a symlink back to every runlevel so I have to stop it and remove the symlink again...
well chmoding -x /etc/init.d/proftpd will probably stop it from starting up after an upgrade, but still thats a little bit to much enthusiasm I need from my system....
