prevent services from autostarting after install?

Hi ALL.
every time I install a daemon (apache, ftpd etc...) it is
automatically started after installation like
Code:
apt-get install oidentd
Reading Package Lists... Done
.....................
Setting up oidentd (2.0.7-1) ...
Starting ident daemon: oidentd.
Any way to prevent this?
Thanks in advance.

thank you for you response but thats not exactly what I was asking about
ok, heres an example:
1. I install profptd, it starts itself right after installation with default config.
2. I stop the service(because its not configured and I dont need it to be running yet) and remove the symlink from my default runlevel so it doesnt start at boot.
3. I upgrade proftpd and again it starts, plus puts a symlink back to every runlevel so I have to stop it and remove the symlink again...
well chmoding -x /etc/init.d/proftpd will probably stop it from starting up after an upgrade, but still thats a little bit to much enthusiasm I need from my system....

In Debian, explore the use of a update-rc.d command. You might also look into the sysvinit package.

Install the "sysv-rc-conf' application and use it to configure which daemon starts in which runlevel. Works great.
