Ping Failure

I cannot ping from my debian...and cannot ping to debian...

when I give ifconfig command.....

then it shows....

eth0....description..

lo ....description...

sl0.....description...

But at my redhat ..it shows only etho and lo....and ping from their smoothly...

my question is what is that "sl0"..stands for..can I disable it...

will my ping problem solved after disabling it....

NO. It won't solve your problem. Have you edited /etc/network/interfaces to have an IP or dhcp stanza for eth0?

If you are using dhcp, type:

dhclient eth0

and then try pinging.

my /etc/network/interfaces file is as follows :

# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

# The loopback interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The first network card - this entry was created during the Debian installation# (network, broadcast and gateway are optional)
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.3
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.3

I don't want to use dhcp.....

I just want to ping through my lan card to another pc ( lan card ) ...

Is this machine a router? why do you have its own IP set as the gateway? Have you read the Networking howto at The Linux Documentation Project yet? You should give it a look over.

thanks for your co-operatin...Actually I am really sorry that I am making yourself disturbed...My problem has been solved...I just re-install the debian at my redhat PC..and re-install the redhat 9 again at my debian PC...now my debian PC is working fine..But I cannot communicate between redhat and debian...and another thing will I disable my gateway, broadcast,network..etc..at /etc/network/interfaces file....

Please suggest..cause my goal is to setup the exim 4 version at debian..and make it work....that's all...

I have downloaded the latest version of exim....and also untar it to my /home/test directory and studying on that...

Please suggest me how can I be confirmed that my exim configuration is alright or not...

I mean when I am telneting to my 110 port it shows...

test@debian:/$ telnet debian.dhaka.net 25
Trying 192.168.0.2...
Connected to debian.dhaka.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 debian.dhaka.net ESMTP Exim 3.35 #1 Tue, 16 Dec 2003 04:43:11 +0600
HELO dhaka.net
250 debian.dhaka.net Hello test at debian.dhaka.net [192.168.0.2]
mail from: test@debian.dhaka.net
250 <test@debian.dhaka.net> is syntactically correct
rcpt to: help@debian.dhaka.net
250 <help@debian.dhaka.net> verified

but at last it should be "syntactically correct" instead of "verified" I think...

and please suggest me some telnet command when I am telneting to 110 and 25 port....is the commands same for 110 and 25 port..

when I am telneting to my 110 port it says...

test@debian:/$ telnet debian.dhaka.net 110
Trying 192.168.0.2...
Connected to debian.dhaka.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Qpopper (version 4.0.4) at debian.dhaka.net starting. <1991.1071528479@deb>

what is Qpopper....I think it is another MTA..how can I disable it..and start work with exim..

waiting for your valuable comments....

and which command I should give to test 110 port..cause my HELO command is not recognized by 110 port..{ I think by Qpopper }

Thanks again..for you time....
