Packages to install

Hi,
"testing" 2.6,
Since there are thousands of packages which I don't understand most of them ....
Is there a list of recommended packages after installation ?
Maybe some kind of guide that explains useful packages to install , beside the obvious like openoffice etc.

Thanks.

I wouldn't think theres a guide that would explain what packages to install as each machine/user is different. Like you said theres the obvious suspects, OO, X (if you want it) etc but past that it's up the the person using the machine.

Yeah, that is kind of going at it backwards. Usually you would know what you wanted to do, but not the name of the app that does it. If you use synaptic, you can somewhat browse them based of function, i.e. email/graphics/networking...

You might like the minimal install sarge or etch guides at http//thegoldenear.org/toolbox/unices/ or in the Debian System book by Martin F. Kraft. http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/ also is good general reference.
