Ok, just installed new kernel from source, having a problem.

As my system boots its new kernel, it boots fine up until the last thing it does, that is, starting cron.
The last message I get is something along the lines of "starting cron". Then it hangs for a little while and I get 6 messages, each saying that a process is respawning too fast. So it stops them for 5 minutes. After that, I got a message saying "no more process left in the run level" What have a done wrong in configuring my kernel? Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you use the previous working config to configure the kernel? It's a complex beast and using old configs is the way to go. Change only a few things at a time so you can track what you changed.
