C+A+F1 won't kill the x server, it just changes to a different screen. either exit normally, or zap it with C+A+backspace. if it keeps reloading, run "init 3" and then kill it. you will then be left at a console without X running (run "ps ax" to make sure)

you can also stop the X server (X will automatically restart if you logout or kill it with ctrl-alt-backspace) by stopping the desktop manager with

Code:
su -c "/etc/init.d/gdm stop"
if you're using gdm as ur desktop manager (you can also try xdm or kdm).

you're also going to need the kernel headers to install the nvidia driver.

Code:
su -c "apt-get install kernel-headers-$(uname -r)"
and remember if you ever update your kernel, you'll need to download the new kernel headers and rerun the nvidia installer

Code:
nvidia-installer --force-update
