Netselect not working behind proxy

Hmmm - I can't get to the internet other than via a proxy.
I do export http_proxy=http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/ (with the appropriate numbers filled in)
and
export ftp_proxy=$http_proxy

But when I run netselect ftp.us.debian.org I get:

"netselect: unknown host ftp.us.debian.org"

Any ideas?
