Need a little advice about apt-get

For starters. I installed Debian from Knoppix 3.7 after being unhappy with
MKD 10.0 and 10.2.

I was reading how one should update the package list with apt-get. That is
where I messed things up. I know better than to read.

When I did apt-get and got the available package list, everytime I try to open
the package manager from the Knoppix menu the package manager starts
and then locks up.

I guess what I need to know, might there be a way to remove the package list
which was gotten via apt-get without destroying everything else.

I have read the HOW-TO but I am not quite sure if I am able to go back before
I used apt-get update.

Thanks a bunch
Dooley

Try removing the .kpackage in your homedir. If that doeesn't work resort to the command line. Sources are kept in /etc/apt/sources.list. Perhaps Knoppix even has the apt-config tool which lets you choose your sources.

Thanks Moloko for the advice.

I knew about /etc/apt/sources but I was not sure if I removed all that
was in the folder if it would take down the whole system.

I switched from MDK to Debian and I don't think I will be sorry.

What I would like to do is run this machine on just as bare bones
as possible and just use what I need. I don't need any developer
or program building apps. when I ran apt-get I was mostly wanting
any security updates.

I removed the kpackage folder in my homedir. but everytime I run
the KPackage from the desktop it puts it back, but a least I can get
it to run. There must be conflict between some of the sources and
the KPackage tool which came with Knoppix. I can't uninstall any of
the new packages from the KPackager.

Again, thanks a bunch
Dooley
