make menuconfig | xconfig | gconfig don't work
Hi, I'm reasonably new to the Debian distribution and it seems neccessary to recompile the kernel for smb support.
I've got sources, linked to /usr/src/linux but which I go into the directory and do make menuconfig I get:
My-Machine:/usr/src/linux# make menuconfig
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lncurses
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
>> Unable to find the Ncurses libraries.
>>
>> You must install ncurses-devel in order
>> to use 'make menuconfig'
make[2]: *** [scripts/lxdialog/ncurses] Error 1
make[1]: *** [menuconfig] Error 2
make: *** [menuconfig] Error 2
When I apt-get install ncurses it says I've got the latest version but I still can't make menuconfig. I've tried make xconfig and make gconfig but neither work. I'm using Gnome 2.10.2 so I should have GTK for gconfig but it says:
My-Machine:/usr/src/linux# make gconfig
/bin/sh: pkg-config: command not found
*
* Unable to find the GTK+ installation. Please make sure that
* the GTK+ 2.0 development package is correctly installed...
* You need gtk+-2.0, glib-2.0 and libglade-2.0.

make[1]: *** [scripts/kconfig/.tmp_gtkcheck] Error 1
make: *** [gconfig] Error 2
What on earth is going on?
