xconfig, menuconfig

Problem trying to run make xconfig or make menuconfig, I receive the following, this is after executing make mrproper then make clean:

HOSTCC scripts/basic/fixdep
/bin/sh: line 1: gcc: command not found
make[1]: *** [scripts/basic/fixdep] Error 127
make: *** [scripts_basic] Error 2

Can anyone tell me why please.

OK thanks for that, I can run make menuconfig now, but cannot run make xconfig due to this:

scripts/kconfig/qconf arch/i386/Kconfig
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

qconf: cannot connect to X server :0.0
make[1]: *** [xconfig] Error 1
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

Any advice?
