Madwifi no install candidate

when i use apt-get install madwifi-source
it says:
Package madwifi-source is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package madwifi-source has no installation candidate

i have edited /etc/apt/sources.list to get from the non-free and thats the only thing i know of to do any help would be appreciated

did you remember to update apt after changing your sources list ?

if you want to use the module assistant to install madwifi the Debian way, heres a quick run through

aptitude update
aptitude keep-all
aptitude install build-essential module-assistant madwifi-tools
m-a update
m-a prepare
m-a a-i madwifi

Madwifi should definitely be in non-free

Code:
debianetch:/etc# apt-cache policy madwifi-source
madwifi-source:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:0.9.2+r1842.20061207-2etch1
  Version table:
     1:0.9.2+r1842.20061207-2etch1 0
        500 http://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu etch/non-free Packages

Looks like you need to edit your /etc/apt/sources list.. just add non-free to ALL the lines in your sources.list Remember this is a source package so non-free must be on the deb-src lines

Code:
debianetch:/etc# cat /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu/linux/debian/ etch main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu/linux/debian/ etch main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main
then update aptitude and try again

aptitude update
m-a a-i madwifi
