Low volume with alsa on nVidia audio device
Hello,
I recently bought a new pc and successfully installed debian lenny.
Now I'm trying to configure the sound card and despite is recognised correctly, I get a very low volume. Mixer sliders are at 100%.
This is the hardware:

And install alsa-plugins, same ver as the latest you have (or wait till they come).
What ver of KDE do you have?
Arts may not be required in kde 4.x.x, use pulse instead. Regardless of the negative press, it works on most systems.
My chipset is MPC78 (ALC883)

Most of this info is usefull for the alsa gurus, but It can be amazing how having the version of your libs and plugins match your main modules. <edit> can help running a clean system</edit>
And if you persist with the alsa group (where you got the alsa script from,) they may be able to give you more substantial information concerning your sound chip.
But either way, if you can give some more info on you desktop manager and OS(linux)we may be able to save you some time.

I cant' explain why my version shows up that way...
I installed debian stable (lenny) and then upgraded some packages from backports. As far as I know alsa driver are shipped with the kernel's binary images.
Maybe upgrading my kernel (now I have 2.6.26) caused this situation?

KDE is 3.5. My OS is Debian 5.0 (lenny)

With kde3.5 you will require aRts. And maybe not pulse (kde4.x)
Alsa plugins allow other programs to use the sound server. while other programs are using it, like a mixer.

The low volume may be controlled by the alsa mixer and or kmix (kde), be sure to check your master volume, it may be called "Front" instead of Main or Master.
