LaTeX disaster

Hi all! I have a np-hard problem with LaTeX.

First of all, I tried to install tetex on my Debian Lenny box (tetex-base, tetex-common, tetex-bin, tetex-extra) and the installation seemed to be ok. Then, I tried compiling a test document (which is sinctattically correct), but I could do it only as root. Trying to solve the problem by looking around the net, only made it worse. Now tetex doesn't work at all:

Quote:
root@hexcellion:/home/uruclef# latex text.tex
This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4)
kpathsea: Running mktexfmt latex.fmt

Warning: mktexfmt is being run as root; fmtutil-sys should probably be
used instead. If this is done by a Debian package upon installation,
upgrade, or removal, please file a bug against that package.

mktexfmt: no info for format `latex'.

Warning: mktexfmt was run as root; fmtutil-sys was used instead.

I can't find the format file `latex.fmt'!
I tried running ktexfmt --all as root and as normal user, but nothing changed. I also tried reinstalling the packages from scratch, uninstalling them with apt-get remove --purge, and then reinstalling. No change; it's like the disinstallation procedure leaves some spare file somewhere, but I don't know not where nor what to look for.

Thank you for your attention, any help would be greatly appreciated

Try aptitude --purge, then update the package database (updatedb, as root) and locate any remaining files with the locate latex command (also as root). If found, remove with rm -f (careful! check twice before hitting the enter-key!) and start again

I did it, but it didn't resolve anything. I had to manually create empty file, anyway, because dpkg couldn't configure latex-bin otherwise. please help!

I solved uninstalling tetex and installing livetex. Now seems to work fine, but I have another problem. In lyx only root user can export to an usable format (latex, pdf...).
