Kudos to Debian

Just migrated both of my Ubuntu computers to Debian 6.0.1 after experimenting with it in a virtual machine for some time. The 6 month release cycle of Ubuntu was getting a little annoying, as well as the fact that the next default desktop was going to be "Unity", so I grabbed the 64 bit netinstall disc and decided to give it a shot. It wasn't until I migrated my server that I realized how much easier Debian was to set up as a server. The little checklist during install made it super-easy to set up the services I wanted, and upon completing the installation I had a fairly secure and functional Apache and SSH server. A few tweaks to the config files and I was good to go. You do have to give up some of the out-of-the-box user friendliness, but in general it seems to be working better for me than Ubuntu was. Just wanted to give my little testimonial to Debian Linux, the father of distributions like Ubuntu.

I like your sig. One of my favorite sayings of out founders in the US. Just as true now as when he said it. It hit me right in the face when they passed the "Patriot" act.

I have always had an install of Debian on my box but have used Ubuntu as my "main" for the past few years (starting with 8.04). Pretty good distro up till 10.04. That is when I started working on this install. Got it in shape to take over a couple months ago.

It is different but I have found that it is easier to configure in most ways. Ubuntu has been trying to limit what you can do with it too much. I think it started heading that way with 8.10 but really didn't get rolling along until 10.04. Really too bad.

Debian is more fun.
