Kmix slider does not control HDA sound

I tried several Debian based live CDs on my new desktop which has an intel HDA audio controller. On my previous PC, I used to control the sound using the slider of Kmix. Unfortunately, this does not work on my new PC. To adjust sound, I have to open Kmix and adjust the Front slider the one next to the PCM slider. I noticed that this does not happen in some other live CD that is not based on Debian. Did any body faced and solve such a problem?

(at least in gnome)

right click on the volume icon, go to preferences, and select front as the device to control.
