KDE Upgrade Problem

I am running KDE4 / Debian Unstable on 2 machines.

For some time now I have been unable to upgrade any KDE packages - There are about 270 packages waiting. No matter what I've tried to upgrade, it wants to remove a whole slew of other packages, many of which seem to be essential.

Is this a general problem? I have not been able to find any references to it.

Could somebody please suggest a course of action?

I should have said I am using Synaptic. When I select a package for upgrade I get a box listing what packages will be removed, installed and upgraded.

In each case packages like kde-core, kde-full, kde-runtime are listed as "will be removed".

I have to say that I am disappointed with KDE 4. A lot of change for it's own sake. However, somehow, Gnome and I haven't ever clicked.

As requested by craigevil, the exact output would be more helpful. For example what happens when you do
Code:
aptitude safe-upgrade
or even
Code:
aptitude full-upgrade
(after doing an "aptitude update")?

Cheers,

Evo2.

kde-full, kde-core, and kde-core do not exist in sid.In any case they were just metapackages not the actual kde.

kde-standard installs the "full" kde4.
kdebase will install the bare minimal kde4.

Sorted

I ran aptitude safe-upgrade and aptitude full-upgrade to see what would happen. I then tried to intelligently (?) upgrade groups of packages. The long and the short of it is that I managed to work my way out of the minefield without anything too drastic happening.

Thanks a lot for the advice.
