KDE 3.3.1 issue

Hi,
Yesterday I tried to upgrade KDE from 3.2 to 3.3.1. This is how I tried to do
$ apt-get install kdebase
$ apt-get install kde

After the installation, I tried to log into KDE.
After loging in I found that no applications are listed in the K-Menu.
That is, when I click on the "K" button, there is nothing between "All Applications" and "Actions".
Nothing happens when I right click the desktop and choose - 'Configure Desktop' or when I right click the panel and choose 'Configure Panel'.
I think, I have completely messed up my KDE. I can log in to GNOME but still I want to sort out this issue as well.
Then I created a new user, and tried to log in to KDE as this user. I was successful. Very strange.
I request your suggestions.
My OS - Debian Sarge

What's the problem? Sounds like you already solved it

I had no problems upgrading KDE to 3.2 on Sarge from Unstable repositories, but did manually select each and every kde package I have to upgrade.

Hi Moloko,
I don't know whether the issue is solved or not, because I had to create a new user to log into kde and use it without any problems. I am still unable to put KDE to use in my usual user account. I tried to rename .kde in the users home directory. Still nothing happens. No applications are seen in the K-menu.

Did you try (re)moving all profile information? It's a small pain if this works as it should. If a new user can use KDE normally it must be a problem with the profile information one should think.

That is what I thought. So I renamed .kde and .kderc. But unfortunately there seems to be no effect. What other files/folders should I try to rename?

.config/menus and .dmrc perhaps? Or move ALL data out of the way and move the application data back once it works. It's a weird problem.

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried it. Now I am getting this error message -

Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:
klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'file'

What could be the reason?

hmm, I found a message which says to remove /var/tmp/kdecache-[user] and then log into KDE. It might help. Anything else is beyond me, since I can't speak from experience here.

Wow man! It worked! Thank you! Thank you so much!
I rm'ed the dir /var/tmp/kdecache-[troublesome_user] and logged in.
The problem was solved. I am writing this as the same user.
Thanks once again.

I will note down the problem, the error message and your solution in my little diary/journal which I keep for reference.
