installing SID problem

I figured out most of my problems by just installing over and over and trying to get it working. Well X is up (finally) mouse is working (oh, joy) but now I got a whole new problem. After all this trouble on my old box I wanted to do it right in one go. This is what happends:

I'm installing SID from net install and changing the sources to unstable after selecting a couple of ftp sourches. That used to work fine but since this morning it also downloads a new kernel image. I get some warnings and if I choose not to install it ends the installation. If I choose to install it does quite nicely but it wont boot anymore after all is done. That sux... It says that if I install two images will be there and I could run in to trouble. Well I do! Is it normal that during sid install it gets the newer kernel? I thought kernel install always had to be done seperatly since you also have to fix lilo and get rid of the old version. Just typing lilo after the kernel upsate is to easy problably. Anyone used netinstall resently working from a sarge image and getting the same problem (hopefully with a solution)

Regards

(thanx for reading al my crap the last couple of days but I really want to get Debian working)

short follow-up. I installed aptitude, and it also gives the newer kernel as an option. It also mentions some scripts that should prevent boot problems. I guess it will replace and let me configure the newer kernel? Does it work this way (I would hate to be stuck again, I'm just getting along nicely) Aptitude installs KDE real easy btw...
