I was planning on installing Debian using a netinstall and I always get stuck where it asks what software to install (desktop, mail server, print server, etc.) but i don't know which to choose.
1. It seems that if i just choose the first one it's basiaclly just xorg/xserver and i don't really know what to do from there.
2. if i choose the first option and the last one i get Debian with Gnome, and a lot of extra packages i really don't want.
3. if i don't choose any i guess it's just 'text based'
i know that if i install xorg i can then install whatever desktop environment that i want.
gonig throgh the installation process takes a long time one the computer that i have.
i'm not sure if i was right about what i said. but i really want like the simple KDE desktop with only the required packages.
any clarification of any sort would be greatly appreciated. i'm not gonig to install until i know what i really should install (i know how to use apt, and i would probably. ) i don't know how to modify the sources.list file.
Well, install 'nothing' and let it reboot. Log in as root and fire up aptitude:
Code:
aptitude
This gives you some kind of graphics to look at, albeit a bit spartan Enable NumLock on the Numerical keyboard and initiate an update with the u key. Now use the / key to start a search for a package and the n key to cycle through the results. When you found the right package, hit the + key on the numerical keyboard to select it for installation, a - removes a package. The packages you want are: xorg, xorg-server, kdm and kde. With the g key you can check if you want the package, again you can cycle through the selected packages with the cursor keys. Hitting the g key for the second time actually starts the installation process.
