Originally posted by amnesty_puppy After intial problems with my Debian install I've got a good working system with a nice new 2.6.9 kernel, although I now have it dual booted with windows (for gaming only) but my debian desktop seems a little slow. It's not really jerky or overly noticable, just things take that tiny bit longer to work - one major thing: firefox on debian seems to load slower than IE on windows. Is there anything I can do to get things going a bit faster? I've heard using a different x server can speed things up like directfb or xorg. Also, as a seperate question, how much does using a source based distro like Gentoo actually increase performance?
Thanks, Dom.

Here's a couple of ideas to think about. You are using the window manager XFCE.
Firefox, at least mine, uses the GTK libraries. So if you are not using gnome, I believe there is some more overhead loading the GTK libs/settings/etc.
If you run it, it may start a little slow, but if you close it, then run it, it will start faster since it is already cached in ram.
Someone expressed concern over kernel mode linux posing a security risk. I suppose that if you use a web server with cgi-bin, which allows external programs to be executed on your computer, your system would be compromised regardless. Use a web server that does not allow this, and the added benefit is that they are more efficient ( dhttpd for example ). On the other hand, he could have meant that kernel mode linux inherently poses a security risk. So is running X as root; it all depends on what you do to or with your system. If you install programs that are meant to make your system vulnerable, or execute them yourself, then obviously you pose a security risk to yourself.
FWIW, i just reformatted my hd, using "dd" and knoppix (see the last page of the Debian Configuration sticky), then as usual, i installed Debian with the net-installer, did a simple partition (root and swap) chose XFS as my file system, you have to use LILO, (the installer will do it for you). Reiserfs is another fast one, skipped the installation of packages section, at the end, installed:
x-window-system-core
menu
aterm
locales
nano
firehol
xfe
mozilla-firefox
icewm
icewm-themes
kernel-image-2.6.9-1-686 (only on Sid, in Sarge it's 2.6.8)
rebooted, this is a very light installation, of course, you can choose wmaker, fluxbox, etc. My old box flies (PII 266), sometimes you have to get rid of the garbage and cowebs accumulated. Anyway, i noticed the change inmediatiately.
