i8kutils and inspiron 15r

I have a new Dell laptop inspiron 15r, which I believe is model 5520. I got debian testing onto it with just a little trouble. This was fixed by updating to a liquorix kernel. Anyway, the point is that I want to make sure that the fan is running right. Sometimes it's on, sometimes it's off. I suspect it's doing the right thing, but I'm not sure. I installed i8kutils, but I'm not at all sure it's doing anything. Anyone have experience here?

I hassled with it several years ago. I recall it being more difficut than I thought it should be. I can give you some pointers to get started begin with the manual, use:
Code:
man i8kmon
in a terminal. As I recall, you need a configuration /etc/i8kmon.conf (or maybe just /etc/i8kmon) you can copy the one from /usr/share/doc/i8kutils/examples

Hopefully someone can provide more detail later... but I hope this can help
