Hello, i have a friend who wants to give a try to Linux. I'm not a Debian user or even a Knoppix user, but i have tested them for a few months before. Well the case is, she use an HP complete box, i have tried before to install redhat and mandrake in her box, but received continuous errors when i want to partition the hard disk or any other error, well the case is i run Knoppix in her box it boot fine, etc , etc. I tried to configure the sound for her, Knoppix even find her sound card, but say that wasn't compatible, that's not a big issue i guess compile a new kernel for her should solved that. The problem is i don't have 1 single idea on how to configure PCI winmodems under any Linux box. I don't even know where to start, i will be glad if someone would give me a complete actual guide to make the conection to internet between Knoppix and her winmodem. I know that maybe Knoppix could be a little hard for my friend (she is very very newbie even under windows) but i tried to install friendly linux under her HP box whit no success i actually use Slackware but i think Slack either could be so friendly like for her, so i decide to give her Knoppix. Wish someone could help me i would appreciate.
Ohh, I know that they are some unsupported win-modems under linux. I know you have to search for the driver install that driver, and then what??? I only work whit Adsl and network card under linux, so I still don't have any idea how to configure a winmodem under linux. But my friend really want to use it, By the way I am a girl too. Happy slacker.
Had a similar problem before with Knoppix autoconfiguring, but Debian proper not automatically choosing the right modules on install. Heres what I did:
Boot from Knoppix
Open a terminal
type "lsmod"
This should give you a list of loaded modules. If there is a particular module needed for this modem, it should be there. Take note of the module, and either select it at install or install it later. I realise that this is easier said then done as you need the module to connect to the net... but maybe download it via knoppix & save to floppy??
The Kernel you are using may also make a difference - if your kernel does not support that modem, try installing with a newer version (ie, woody with the bf24 option at install, or sarge or sid)
