How to optimise Debian boot scripts?

Hi,

My Debian Sarge install takes a long time to boot, with certain modules being attempted to load multiple times, ACPI probes hanging for a few seconds, and just general noise. Two questions really:

1) What is the best process for optimising System V boot scripts?

2) I have had problems messing with the kernel in the past so would rather not have to, but if need be what is the safest way to do this without messing up modules? What directory(s) do I need to back up to make sure this doesn't happen?

Cheers,
Aaron
