How to completely remove totem?

I have installed mplayer and mozilla-mplayer.
Now I want to completely remove totem.
I use apt-get --purge remove totem, but it will only remove totem.
If I use apt-get --purge remove totem* ,it will remove a lot of things.(deskbar-applet* gedit* gnome-core* libtotem-plparser1*
python-gnome2-desktop* python-gnome2-extras* rhythmbox* totem*
totem-mozilla* totem-xine*)

if youre having that many problems with dependencies you should try synaptic. that way you can just uncheck the packages you dont want removed.

The reason you are being prompted that it's going to remove all of that, is because totem is installed in the "gnome" metapackage. Any attempt to remove any application installed by a metapackage results in the entire metapackage being removed.
