You probably want the netinst. That's a 160MB-odd download, and then whatever more packages are needed are downloaded during the install.

You also almost definitly want the i386 version. What processor do you have?

Thanks, that's what I figured, I'm downloading it now, because before I posted this I had accidently downloaded the alpha one. and then I didn't know what was wrong so I looked more closely, and I realized I had downloaded the wrong one.

Also, are the packages that are downloaded really needed? Because I may wind up putting it on a computer without internet, so would I absolutely have to download the huge file for that?

Which architecture to download is dependant on your processor.. like I said you almost definitely have an i386 processor; that's all Pentiums, Celerons, Core (2) Duos, Athlons and Durons. Note: if you know you have a 64-bit processor and want a 64-bit OS (I wouldn't, yet), then you want the AMD64 version.

If the computer will not have an Internet connection while installing, then your best bet is the full install.

The i386 is the correct one, so debian-40r1-i386-CD-1.iso would be the one I want? There are lots of like 650 MB files, and I'm hoping/guessing I only need the first one, right?

edit: I looked on the site again (because I thought I had read something there) and I was right, I only need the first CD.
