Gnome sound events loop

Debian Sarge
Soundblaster live 5.1

Enabling sound events in Gnome causes continual looping of sound. Example would be logging into Gnome, startup.wav file is heard but plays non-stop until sound events disabled. Not sure where to start, Any help appreciated

Playing of cd's sound is ok.
