hi im trying to install a smp kernel, when i run apt-get install linux-image-2.6.16-2-686-smp it says it can't find the package. anyone know why this isnt working? i heard teh newer kernel versions detect dual-core any recommendations on one to install. im currently running etch
Maybe I'm missing something, but your profile says you are using Mandrake, yet you use apt. Last I checked (which, admittedly was a while ago) Mandrake was rpm based.

A quick search here (amd64) shows only 2.6.17 and above for a kernel in Etch so use apt-cache search linux-image to see what is available for images to install. For your -smp needs with 2.6.17 and above it is enabled by default in Debian so you just need to install/reboot into one of them to get your smp working.
