i just installed debian etch (i386) on my system. although the installation went without any hassles, now when i boot into etch, it stucks in-between.
the line says:
sd:2:0:0:0: attached scsi disk sda
sda -> my sata hard-disk
system specs:
AMD 64 Athlon X2
1 GB DDR2
160 GB SATA HD
If you know for sure the hard drive is working fine it may be a problem with the IDE controller. You can look in your bios if there's any option for this controller like "compatible mode" or something like that. Did you successfully use this computer with any other distribution or live-cd ?
Can you give the reference of the laptop/motherboard (if not a laptop) ?

yep, i have already used ubuntu 64-bit and fedora 8(i386)
btw, i read on some forums that this is an issue with AMD 64 arch. and the newer AMD 64 debian etch has got a work-around.
does the AMD 64 arch. support only 64-bit versions of distros..? i also faced some problems installing i-386 versions of other distros except debian.

You might want to try a custom iso from here: http://mirror.home-dn.net/d-i/
Was the easiest way for me to install on an all sata box including sata dvd drive with asus p5k-v mobo.
Edit: You can run 32-bit OS's just fine on an amd 64, but why not try the 64-bit etch when you do a fresh install anyway?
Sometime there is slight differences in drivers between 32 and 64 bit edition off the same distro, but outside those rare cases any can fit a 64bit capable amd or Intel.
I couldn't find any problem with your board on the web outside of a few people having to upgrade the bios before being able to install their distro.
Did you try booting in failsafe mode ? Same result ?

no, i didn't try booting in fail-safe.! will give it a shot.
i tried to install some 32-bit version distros, but none succeeded except Etch and fedora 8.
There i used to get some ACPI related errors.
