I wish this info was added to the WIKI. Or at minimum this post should be made sticky since I am sure others will have exactly the same problems and experience the same frustration (unless they give up and use automatix).

Well, I don't think it is the easiest way to switch to mplayer plugin. I don't even think it is necessary to remove any plugins from firefox if you want to use another one. Just install any plugin you want, and than go to the plugin manager of firefox. Here you can disable the unwanted plugins. Later you can re-enable them.
I guess that there is no way to install gecko-mediaplayer without installing gnome-mplayer as well. Apt says that the mozilla-mplayer package is deprecated.
