dpkg console keymap

I am getting some errors when installing packages with apt-get

Errors are being reported in console-common console-data and base-config.

Setting up console-common (0.7.25) ...
Looking for keymap to install:
uk
dpkg: error processing console-common (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Setting up console-data (2002.12.04dbs-15) ...
Looking for keymap to install:
uk
dpkg: error processing console-data (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of base-config:
base-config depends on console-data (>= 1999.08.29-13); however:
Package console-data is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing base-config (--configure):
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
console-common
console-data
base-config
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I guess that there is a problem with the keymap and I have tried using
"install-keymap /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/uk.kmap.gz"
but this doesn't seem to help

I am using sarge, although currently (recent install, though) the only problem seems to be a lack of a £ on the console (shift-3 gives #-newline)

dpkg-reconfigure for all 3 packages reports that the package is broken or not fully installed.

dpkg -l reports base-config as iU and the console packages as iF

So, could anyone kindly tell me how I can correctly configure the console packages?

Thank-you

first, remove the 3 packages:

apt-get remove --purge console-common console-data base-config

clean your cache

apt-get clean

the reinstall them (don't forget the console-tools)

apt-get install console-common console-data base-config console-tools

then reconfigure console-common

dpkg-reconfigure console-common
